Simple ways to improve self-esteem

By: Melissa Diaz, Wellness AtoZ Program Manager

Self-esteem plays an important role in our mental, emotional, and overall well-being. February is International Boost Self-Esteem Month- a month to encourage people with ways to improve their self-esteem all around the world. Let’s begin with the basics. What is self-esteem? Counselingschools.com shares that self-esteem is how you view yourself regarding your worth and value. If you value yourself, you likely have high self-esteem and are positive and confident. When you have low self-esteem, you are very hard on yourself and don’t feel your best. If you are someone who wants to boost your self-esteem, let us help you! We visited awards4u.com where they share four ways to boost self-esteem. Please see below to read more:

  1. Avoid negative self-talk. If you are constantly thinking about the ways you have made errors or things you haven’t accomplished, they may eventually become the story you always tell yourself. Although it may not seem like it, negative or positive self-talk has a major impact on your self-esteem and emotions. When you catch yourself in negative thought patterns, pause, acknowledge the thoughts, and reframe them with self-affirming positive thoughts.
  2. Stop comparing yourself to others. Someone else’s successes do not diminish your accomplishments. When you compare yourself to someone else; pause and reflect on your journey and how far you have come.
  3. Moving your body has many benefits such as mood improvement. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins which are mood-boosting chemicals. Going on an outdoor walk or a few jumping jacks can make all the difference.
  4. Celebrate your strengths. If you’ve noticed, a common theme in these tips has been to pause and reflect. At the end of each day, take a few minutes to think about something from your day that you did and felt good about. It can be as simple as sending a coworker a positive note, helping someone cross the street, or simply being a friend to someone. Reflecting on these small, but mighty wins, will be an instant mood booster, but also can be a positive habit to get into to boost your self-esteem in the long run.
